How to Display Action Figures: Shelving, Cases & Lighting Ideas for Collectors

Collecting action figures is only half the hobby. The other half is the display — turning your collection into something you're genuinely proud to show off. Whether you've got three figures on a desk or three hundred across an entire room, how you display them matters.

Shelving Options

IKEA KALLAX & BILLY

The most popular shelving choices in the collector community, and for good reason — they're affordable, widely available in the UK, and highly customisable.

KALLAX (cube shelving) works well for in-box displays and Funko Pop! collections. Each cube is roughly 33x33cm, which fits most standard boxes and a row of Pops comfortably. Stack multiple units for a wall-filling display.

BILLY (tall bookcase) is better for loose figure displays. The adjustable shelves let you set exact heights for different scales — crucial if you're mixing 1:10 DC Multiverse figures with 1:12 Marvel Legends. Add the OXBERG glass doors for a dust-free display cabinet at a fraction of the cost of specialist cases.

Shelf depth tip: Standard BILLY shelves are 28cm deep. Most 7" figures with display bases need around 15–18cm, so you'll have room for a second row of smaller figures or accessories behind the front row.

Detolf Display Cabinet (IKEA)

The Detolf is arguably the most popular display cabinet in the collector community worldwide. It's a tall, narrow glass cabinet with four shelves, available in black or white, and costs around £80–90 in the UK.

Why collectors love it:

  • Glass on three sides gives a 270° view of your figures
  • Fits neatly in corners or against walls
  • Easy to add LED lighting strips inside

Limitations: The shelves are fixed and the cabinet is quite narrow (43cm wide), so it suits smaller collections or curated displays rather than large armies of figures.

Display Cases

Acrylic / Perspex Cases

For your most valuable figures — Gold Label exclusives, limited editions, or anything with significant secondary market value — an acrylic display case is worth the investment. They offer full dust protection, UV filtering (on premium models), and a clean, professional look.

Types to consider:

  • Single figure cases: Perfect for a centrepiece figure or a Hot Toys sixth scale piece
  • Multi-figure cases: Tiered acrylic risers inside a larger case let you display a full wave together
  • Stackable cube cases: Popular for Funko Pop! collections — stack them in a grid for a wall display

UV-filtering acrylic is worth the premium for Gold Label and limited edition figures, as direct or indirect sunlight will fade paint decos over time — particularly on brighter comic-accurate decos.

In-Box Display

Displaying figures in their original packaging is a legitimate and popular choice, particularly for collectors focused on long-term value preservation. A few tips for making in-box displays look intentional rather than like unsorted stock:

  • Uniform orientation: All boxes facing the same direction, or alternating front/side for variety
  • Consistent lighting: In-box displays benefit from overhead lighting that illuminates the window packaging
  • KALLAX cubes: Each cube fits most standard 7" figure boxes perfectly, making KALLAX the natural choice for in-box collectors

Lighting

Lighting is the single biggest upgrade you can make to an existing display. The difference between an unlit shelf and a well-lit one is dramatic — it's the difference between figures sitting on a shelf and figures being displayed.

LED Strip Lights

The most popular and cost-effective option. Stick-on LED strips run along the top inside edge of a shelf or cabinet and illuminate the figures below.

What to look for:

  • Warm white (2700–3000K): Creates a premium, gallery feel. Works well with most figure colour palettes
  • Cool white (5000–6500K): Brighter and more clinical — better for photography than display
  • RGB/colour-changing: Popular for gaming setups and Funko displays. Purple or blue tones work particularly well for a dramatic collector aesthetic
  • Dimmable: Essential — full brightness is often too harsh. Being able to dial it back creates a much more atmospheric display

Brands: Govee and Philips Hue both have strong options available in the UK. Govee's addressable LED strips offer per-segment colour control, which lets you create gradient effects across a shelf.

Spotlights & Puck Lights

Battery-powered LED puck lights placed above individual figures create a spotlight effect that's particularly effective for centrepiece figures or dioramas. Rechargeable versions (USB-C) are worth the slight premium over battery-only models.

Backlight / Bias Lighting

LED strips placed behind a shelf unit (between the unit and the wall) create a halo glow effect that makes the whole display pop, especially in a darker room. This works particularly well with KALLAX units and is a popular technique in collector room setups.

Layout & Display Principles

Group by Franchise or Theme

The most common and visually coherent approach — all your DC Multiverse figures together, all your Marvel Legends together, and so on. Within each franchise, group by wave or character team for maximum visual cohesion.

Create Depth

Flat rows of figures at the same depth look static. Use acrylic risers, small wooden blocks, or stacked bases to create height variation within a shelf. Put larger figures at the back, smaller ones at the front. This creates a sense of depth and makes every figure visible.

The Rule of Odds

Odd numbers of figures in a grouping (3, 5, 7) tend to look more visually balanced than even numbers. If you're curating a shelf rather than displaying everything you own, aim for odd-numbered groupings.

Leave Breathing Room

Overcrowded shelves make individual figures hard to appreciate and look cluttered. If you're running out of space, it's a sign to either expand your shelving or rotate figures in and out of storage rather than cramming more in.

Centrepiece Figures

Every great display has a focal point — a larger figure, a diorama, or a particularly striking piece that draws the eye. Build the rest of the shelf around it. For DC collectors, a large BAF character or a Gold Label exclusive works well as a centrepiece. For Marvel Legends, a completed BAF like Galactus or Sentinel commands attention.

Practical Tips

Dust management: Loose figure displays require regular dusting. A soft brush (a clean makeup brush or a dedicated figure brush) is the safest tool — avoid compressed air at close range as it can stress fine accessories and knock figures over.

Earthquake putty / museum gel: If you're in a household with children, pets, or just want peace of mind, a small amount of museum gel under each figure's base keeps them stable without damaging the figure or the shelf surface.

Photography: If you photograph your collection for social media, a plain backdrop (white, black, or a gradient) behind the shelf dramatically improves photos. A lightbox is worth considering for individual figure shots.

Rotation: Don't feel obligated to display everything at once. Rotating figures in and out of storage keeps the display fresh and gives you a reason to revisit figures you haven't looked at in a while.

Building Your Display Over Time
